HYDROSEEDING

The fourth hole at Castle Stuart being hydroseeded in late July, 2007. The pure-fescue mixture, along with a tacifier and special organic fertilizer (chicken manure) were applied with the help of most of the construction crew. The music, taken from “Fallout From the Phil Zone”, is a gesture to course archtiect Gil Hanse.

UPDATE- CHAMBERS BAY

I was fortunate enough to play at Chambers Bay twice in the last two weeks and I wanted to share a few quick thoughts. First off, the greens are still very slow. The speed had not improved since the last time I was there in January. Dave Wieneke and Matt Allen have a big challenge [...]

WE COULDN’T HAVE SAID IT BETTER

While traveling last week, I missed this great article at Out & Back by Dave Zinkhand. For anyone who cares about golf and golf architecture, it is a must read.

CHAMBERS BAY- PART TWO

In the second part of my interview with superintendent Dave Wieneke, he discusses the wall-to-wall use of fescue on at Chambers Bay. A mature strand of fescue will play very fast, allowing for the bump and run shots that the course calls for, but achieving this level of density and health takes time. Chambers Bay [...]

WHAT THE F!

I played golf today at a course in the Virginia suburbs that shall remain nameless. This is what we found on the second green. To say that the hole was cut a little close to the edge would be a masterful example of understatement. The photo does not show that the hole is on top [...]

MID OCEAN- PART TWO

In the second part of my interview with Norman Furtado, he discusses the course’s push-up greens. They switched the greens over to Tifeagle a few years ago under the advice of Patrick O’Brien of the USGA. I was somewhat surprised that Mr. O’Brien did not suggest the replacing of the greens with USGA greens. (Video [...]

BRUCE CADENELLI

Bruce Cadenelli took over as head greenkeeper at French Creek Golf Club, in the fall of 2007. I was there in April of 2008 doing a few touch ups on a couple of bunkers for Jim Wagner and Gil Hanse. Bruce was excited about the potential of the golf course and was hard at work [...]

CHECHESSEE CREEK CLUB

Full Disclosure: I have been a member of this club since 2003 and it is one on my favorite places in the world.
Chechessee Creek is located halfway between Hilton Head and Beaufort, SC and only forty minutes from Savannah. The Coore/Crenshaw low-profile design is an excellent example of how a short course can play much [...]

MATT ALLEN- CHAMBERS BAY

Matt Allen came to Chambers Bay after nine years at Bandon Dunes.  As the General Manager, he is responsible for making things go smoothly in anticipation of the 2010 U.S. Amateur and the 2015 U.S. Open. In this first part of my interview with him, he discusses the site’s history and how it came to [...]
