Geoff Shackelford has done a great job of scouring the press for player reaction to the awful looking Liberty National (here and here). I was pretty amused by a quote from co-designer Tom Kite that were in an article in the New York Daily News by Hank Gola. On Liberty National’s lack of critical acclaim, Kite says:
If you want to play that political game, and buy your way into a list, you can probably do that … so the ratings I think are very misleading. We certainly feel like Liberty National is qualified to be on any of those lists. Everybody that follows golf is going to know more about Liberty National than they did a week ago.
That might not be such a good thing. Kite’s cynicism is amazing even to this cynic and I don’t think the course will crack Golf Mag’s Top 100 when it comes out this week or anytime in the future.
