The remarkable “Red 8th” at St. George’s Hill, the heathland hideout in Berkshire outside of London, is perhaps the greatest example of the need for a golf architect to take the reigns and complete a true heathland restoration. While 27 of the original 36 from Harry Colt still stand as ‘heathy’ and indeed, play quite well, the aesthetics of true heathland golf have been lost. Find a picture of this hole from a hundred years ago, or any turn-of-the-last-century photo of heathland, and tell me that we haven’t lost the plot in the heath. Let us memorialize the true heathland–sandy and windswept golfing plains born anew, please?
love the 4th hole @ SGH.
One of my favorite’s. Very simple but great strategy.
