One of the perks of building the Prairie Club in the summer of 2008 was being only a few hours away from Wild Horse in Gothenberg. If this is not the best course for the money in the U.S., I don’t what is. Dan Proctor and Dave Axland put all of their expertise learned from Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw into this meticulously crafted course. I believe this course has one of the best sets of greens in the country. This course is so good that any lover of golf traveling across the country that does not take I-80 through Nebraska is making a big error. (video after jump)
This video introduces Josh Mahar, the superintendent. Josh does an amazing job keeping the course playing as it was designed, firm and fast. The course uses dwarf bluegrass in the fairways in order to withstand the foot and cart traffic that this municipal course receives. Many have said that in order to get links like conditions, a course must have fescue greens and fairways. Wild Horse proves this to be false. Josh has this place humming all summer long. He is rather modest, claiming that the climate is to be credited for the course’s firmness, but it is clear that he knows when to turn off the water.
These videos were shot in April 2008, just after the rough on the back nine had been burned.

Very nice piece on one of my all-time favorite golf courses. Its a great place for a dog to tag along as well.
I have worked for Josh Mahar since we built Wild Horse. You are right in saying that he is modest. He cares for this course as though it was his own, and takes little or no credit for many years of hard work. I was very pleased to see the article by Mr. Smith, and glad that someone finally praised Mr. Mahar for his work. Thank you from the entire maintenance staff.
