SUPERINTENDENT"S REVENGE?
I played golf today at a course in the Virginia suburbs that shall remain nameless. This is what we found on the second green. To say that the hole was cut a little close to the edge would be a masterful example of understatement. The photo does not show that the hole is on top of a ridge that is about half a foot wide, sloping at three percent on either side.
When I ran into the super while playing the seventeenth, he claimed that the guy cutting the holes had been a little confused that morning and had used the position from the superintendent’s revenge tourney last weekend. The hole had since been moved.
I was glad for the clarification as too many course are cutting holes close too close to the edge of greens in order to ensure tough scoring conditions. The average golfer has not gotten any better, and we need to be making courses easier and more fun rather than more difficult and frustrating.
I sometimes think they’ll do stuff like this to keep golfers from walking on the vast majority of the green as well. Common practice at places like Dyker Beach…
I remember as an 18-year old cutting cups at a hard pan public course in Oklahoma. The super gave me full responsibility on where to place the holes. I knew the USGA rules, but I’d be lying if I said I didn’t push the boundaries some days.
Looks to me, and judging from the picture only, that the green is quite subtle and void of contour. I love the idea of utilizing parts of the green that might not otherwise be used, especially in the time of year when green speeds may be slower. No body says you have to hit it at the flag on the approach. Hit to the middle of the green, two putt, and get your par. Easy-Smeazy, everyone thinks they are as good as touring pros. Play within yourself and golf would be more fun.
I suspect you made par on this hole and simply are hung up on some USGA standard.
Remember they have given up on controlling the game, and they are a governing body. Use high tech clubs and ball, play with balls, and enjoy.
The green actually has a solid slope from back to front with a couple of ridges creating some tricky pin positions.
Congrats for the make mention todd!
